ESCAPE is the new genre of theme park with exciting rides and activities for everyone. ESCAPE will be a world-class leisure and tourism destination that promotes an appreciation of nature in a fun and engaging manner. ESC
APE challenges people of all ages to embrace the notion that growing up is optional. At ESCAPE, there are no rules here, just act like a child and have fun!

ESCAPE, when fully completed, will be located, opposite and adjacent to the Penang Butterfly Farm, Jalan Teluk Bahang. ESCAPE is not located next to the Penang National Park. ESCAPE is separated from the Penang National Park by the township of Teluk Bahang.

For those with the GPS coordinates of the Adventureplay and Waterplay phases are 5.449075,100.215118 and 5.4482,100.213981 respectively. You can copy and paste these coordinates into Google Maps to view the areas.

1) Why do we need ESCAPE?

ESCAPE’s aim is to instill positive attitudes within the visitor so they become more socially aware and over time become more environmentally responsible. ESCAPE is all about bringing the family together in mutual enjoyment of nature and fun. Spending time together doesn’t necessarily mean being encapsulated in air-conditioned shopping malls.

As a significant tourist destination in the region, ESCAPE has a higher purpose of bringing more economic benefit such as job creating and economic spin-off to Penang, and in particular Teluk Bahang. We cannot ignore the fact that Penang is reliant on tourism for a significant part of its income and ESCAPE is conscious that it must act responsibly. Responsible Tourism is not the easy path, but it is the one to be taken to give a positive experience to the local and international tourist along with the community hosting ESCAPE.

2) When will ESCAPE open to the public?

The first phase of ESCAPE will be opening in Q4 2012. The whole project which incorporates Adventureplay, Waterplay and the ESCAPE Hotel will be completed in a 6-year timeframe.

3) What will the entrance fee cover?

One fee – unlimited fun! Group discounts and pre-booking discounts will also be available so it pays to plan your visit. ESCAPE can also be your host for private and corporate parties. We also appreciate that visitors may wish to have Internet access, so for those who have to check-in with work or can’t live without Facebook for a few hours, there’s no need to panic!

4) What about food?

Definitely a question we have to answer for Penangites! Outside food will not be allowed but that does not mean visitors are held hostage to high prices. Reasonably priced food and beverages, mainly featuring famous Malaysian fare, will be readily available.

5) What attire should you wear in the Adventureplay and Waterplay areas?

For the Adventureplay area we would suggest comfortable and casual clothes as the activities include climbing, jumping and generally being active. For the Waterplay area guests must have proper swimwear. Inexpensive swimwear for all cultures will be available for purchase.

6) Who is building ESCAPE?

Sim Leisure is an international theme park consultancy, designer, builder and operator with its HQ in Penang. The company has been instrumental in the success of many projects around the world including Universal Studios Singapore and Lost Paradise of Dilmun, Bahrain. Currently Sim Leisure is involved in the Yas Island projects, Abu Dhabi, Legoland Malaysia along with Penguin Experience at Ski Dubai and the Atlantis Hotel, both in Dubai.

Sim Leisure are also utilising the talents of a number of international experts and consultants to ensure all aspects of the project follow the philosophy of quality and integrity. It is the company’s desire for ESCAPE to be a model, from which the leisure park industry can learn what is truly a sustainable, environmentally sensitive and successful destination.

7) Is ESCAPE in the jungle and are trees going to be cut?

No and No. The location of the ESCAPE waterpark is a former landfill and construction site for the Teluk Bahang Dam that was completed in 1999. Currently it is a degraded brownfield site with undergrowth of lallang, unused buildings and is not inside a rainforest. Should any trees need to be removed they will be replaced by a native species. Actually, ESCAPE will have more trees than it begins with as we are committed to rehabilitating the area.

8) Does ESCAPE require an EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment)?

An EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) is not applicable to Phase 1 of ESCAPE and this has been confirmed by the DOE (Department of Environment). This non-applicability is not because ESCAPE is an environmentally friendly project, rather because ESCAPE is not located in an ESA (Environmentally Sensitive Area). Also the project is too small to warrant such an exercise under the existing law. The DOE is aware that the location of ESCAPE is a ‘Tanah Terbiar’ (brownfield) site.

9) What about the traffic?

A TIA (Traffic Impact Assessment) was completed in July 2011 by an accredited traffic consultant and submitted to the authorities prior to the approval for commencement of work. The traffic forecast study covers a period up to 2021 and the conclusion by 2021 is that the Level of Service (LOS) would be LOS ‘B’. This is considered acceptable under urban street conditions. The current status is LOS ‘A’ which represents ‘free flow’ on a scale of ‘A’ to ‘F’ where LOS ‘F’ is a ‘Breakdown Flow’ (based on AASHTO standards).

10) Is ESCAPE in a water catchment area for the Teluk Bahang Dam?

No. ESCAPE is located below the Teluk Bahang Dam so does not affect the water catchment for the reservoir.

11) What about noise, air pollution and waste?

ESCAPE is not the conventional theme park; it is a new generation of tourist destination that promotes environmental awareness through its predominantly non-mechanical rides, attractions and thought provoking creative themes/ideas. ESCAPE will not have rollercoasters and other mechanical rides that create the noise so typical to conventional types of park. As previously mentioned, ESCAPE is utilising the skills and technologies of international suppliers and consultants to ensure that the impact on the environment is minimised.
